Perfect for preschool or Kindergarten teachers, this bulletin board is a great visual for new students to see their face, their name, and attach a number to it.
“I made the shirt, shorts, and hands/arms then copied onto colored construction paper. I also color copied their photos.”
How can you use this board with your students?
- Have students see if they can find their own name and number from the pictures attached.
- If you have a letter of the day, have students try and find classmates’ names that begin with that letter from the wall.
- See if students can line up in order based on their given number (obviously calling out each number and having one student at a time join the line – until they are ready to do it more independently later).
Learning Names and Numbers
Materials Needed:
- Light blue bulletin board paper: Use as the background behind the students to really makes their pictures pop.
- Construction Paper: To cut out the shorts and shirts.
- Chevron bulletin board border: For a nice divider between students.
- {optional} Photo paper: Students faces will print more vivid if printed on glossy photo paper as opposed to regular copy paper.
- Sentence strips: For writing student names under their photo.
- Numbers: Place to the left of each child’s name.
Steps to Set Up:
- Begin by taking each child’s picture and printing on {optional} photo paper. Cut out the head only.
- Next, use construction paper to cut out shirts, shorts, and arms for each child. Use a little glue or tape to connect them and run through a laminator. Then cut out around the outside edge only.
- Place your blue background paper on the wall.
- Add the “bodies” and heads on the paper.
- Then add in your sentence strips with student names and the numbers.
- Finally, add your chevron border in between the rows of students to visually break it up.
Teaching brand new students who can not yet read simple things ,like where to grab their materials for the day or place their backpacks, becomes extra hard when name recognition is not yet learned.
Having a simple visual cue will really aid in helping students to recognize those letters and learn their names (and numbers) exponentially faster. It also helps them to start learning their classmates’ names as well!
